Early in her life, my friend “T” was diagnosed as “bi-polar”. She has suffered many years with unpredictable episodes despite the toxic drugs prescribed by her psychiatrist and a carefully controlled diet. The episodes have worsened with age and become more difficult for her husband and children to “manage” without intervention. Several weeks ago, while on vacation in New York, she suffered a major manic episode and was hospitalized in a state that required restraint and sedation. While she was in the hospital, her husband called me – devastated and thinking seriously about having her committed for an extended period.
T’s behavior was apparently so bizarre and disturbing that T’s husband didn’t want to tell me about it. The family had to sleep in shifts so that someone was always awake to make sure T didn’t leave the house or do anything dangerous.
Hearing his desperation, I reminded him about a previous conversation in which we had discussed the “miracle” of fish oil and the amazing results achieved – in “mood disorders” – by administering very high doses. He was skeptical – resentful – and told me nothing that simple could possibly work in a case this serious.
Neverthless, He purchased a high-grade product at the local health store and gave T the first dose about 9:00 pm that evening. Confused and stressed, he gave her 10 gel caps all at once!
He called early the next morning to tell me that T had fallen asleep about 1:00 am – finally – after days of not being able to sleep longer than 30 minutes at a time – and was still sleeping peacefully. After 14 hours, T awoke, dazed but in a near normal state of mind. She was hungry for the first time since the episode and able to carry on a regular conversation. Her husband and other family members were incredulous. Previous experiences required 30 days or more to achieve similar results – with some difficult side effects.
Finally, this past week, T has been completely normal and has returned to her usual daily routine of cooking, and cleaning, shopping, working out and managing her home and family. Her husband has gradually reduced her medication to a quarter dose and is hopeful she will eventually be able to “go without it” – permanently. She is now taking 8 gel caps of oil per day – but spread out over the day – along with the Vitamin C and E. T’s husband now wants to know why everyone especially people with bi-polar problems isn’t taking fish oil!
