Addiction is a disease that has many causes.

Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of the brain. A simple definition would be that someone can be considered addicted to any behavior that they continue to do in spite of negative consequences.

The five main addictions are:

  • Drugs – including prescription
  • Alcohol
  • Food
  • Sex
  • Gambling

There are may choices when it comes to treatment. We believe in natural approaches to help the person regain control over their life and overcome addiction.

Why Are We Seeing an Increase in Drug Addiction?

Availability – Drugs that were created for the use of patients with cancer and other terminal illnesses (Percocet, OxyContin, Oxycodone, etc) are now given to out-patients with common ailments. While an alcoholic takes an average of 17-30 years before drinking turns to abuse and then addiction, the new drugs on the market are causing the addiction cycle to occur rapidly, at an average of 7 years.

For some people the addiction may be caused by a syndrome called Reward Deficiency Syndrome, read more here.

Prevention for Parents:

How can you prevent your child from becoming an addict of opiates? Take responsibility! Educate yourself and your children. Prevention is the best method – however, if drug use is suspected, proper drug testing should be administered every two days for one week or more. If your child should test positive for opiates or other drugs seek help immediately before abuse becomes addiction. A simple urine test will work.
