Dr. Miguel Cruz and his wife Lesia stand at the sign that welcomes patients to their modern office on East Main Street where compassionate, drug-free care is combined with the latest technology and treatment methods. The practice has grown tremendously over the past 30 years, so much that an associate doctor will be brought in soon to assist with patient needs.
Cruz Chiropractic opened their doors in 1982 as “Family Chiropractic Center.” In the beginning, Dr. Cruz opened under the guidance of Dr. Charlie Ward of Elizabethton, Tennessee. Dr. Ward would come by for weekly visits until Dr. Cruz grew confident in running the business side of things. Dr. Cruz stated that his schooling did a great job in preparing him to see patients, but the business side just comes with experience.
One year later he had 100% control of the office and changed the name to “Cruz Chiropractic.” Soon after things got so busy that a second staff had to be added and his marriage to Lesia Elliott brought in a much needed office manager. In the mid-eighties, the clinic was one of the first office’s to have a computer, used mostly for insurance billing.
In the eighties the majority of our patients had $50.00 deductibles and 80-90% insurance coverage. Today only 20% of our patients have insurance and deductibles are $1000.00 or more. Due to this change patients are given multiple options for payment plans keeping things very affordable. Making drug free health care affordable is still one of our main goals.
In the beginning patients got adjustments of the spine by hand and things were simple. Now with all the technology, advances have been made to allow for better, more comfortable patient care and adjustments are very gentle using advanced instruments and special tables. This allows us to care for all parts of the body, including knees, shoulder, and TMJ, regardless of the age or condition of the patient.
After 19 years in practice Cruz Chiropractic built a new office with the help of Tyner Construction. Tyner’s made building easy and did an awesome job. Now our office has the latest in Computer technology to digitally access x-rays, exams and notes, all at the touch of a button so there is no more scurrying around the office to find this test or that exam finding. This allows the best and quickest possible care for the patient.
Our office is also equipped with the latest in computer technology to determine the health of your nervous system using the Insight Millennium 2000 which has the prestigious designation as “Certified Space Technology” by the NASA Space Foundation. This technology was originally used to measure changes in the spinal muscles of astronauts caused by space flight. It is painless, economical and only takes minutes.
Dr. Cruz uses the Insight technology to measure subluxations, which are misalignments of the spine causing nerve interference. These misalignments disturb the muscle’s regular nerve function, causing an abnormal amount of electrical flow to the muscles and organs creating other health problems. The Insight millennium 2000 measures the electrical flow and charts it, using graphics that show the spine and makes it easy for the patients to understand where the problem is as well as measuring outcomes to see how it is improving.
We also have the most advanced cold laser in the world. Cold Laser is relatively new technology which is painless and allows for rapid healing of injuries on a cellular level. Painful conditions such as tendonitis/bursitis, carpal tunnel, ruptured discs, arthritis and much more respond quickly with the cold laser. Best of all it works quickly and without side effects. There are only two of these specific units in the state of North Carolina . Our office staff has grown to four full time staff and soon an associate doctor will be brought in to help Dr. Cruz with the growing patient needs. The office is now open 5 days a week for the care of our patients.
Most people are amazed by the fact that 35% of our patients are children being seen for many of the common childhood complaints without the use of drugs or surgery. You may think that chiropractic is just for back pain and headaches. Unfortunately this is a misconception. Chiropractic is now and has always been for the health of the whole body. Now with the latest in technology, infants, even newborns are seen on their way home from the hospital to check the health of their nervous system after the birth. We all know the birth is hard for mom; yes it is hard for that newborn as well.
On the other end of the spectrum our oldest patient was 105 and got excellent results, so we see all ages; definitely a “family practice.” We would like to thank the community for their support over the years. We look forward to serving you and your families.
